We all know about danger in the workplace. You only have to turn on the news to see reports of increased attacks and violence in work environments. How do these incidents translate to the campus work environment? Are student employees, who often take on roles of front-line staff, aptly trained and prepared to deal with volatile situations spurred on by aggressors that might be on the edge of violence? If they find themselves alone and without immediate assistance, which is often the case, will they be able to stay cool, manage the threatening behavior, and keep safe?
This webinar will offer practical and clear advice—for both student workers and those who manage student workers— on how to deescalate a potentially dangerous situation. Participants will learn how to identify the stages of escalation and develop the proper mindset. The use of persuasion and meta-communication principles to calm a dangerous and threatening individual will also be discussed. The presenter will explain how to calm the aggressor down, redirect their frustrations, and ensure proper follow-up and documentation after the crisis is resolved, all while keeping safe.
